In-home/domestic services may now operate subject to Phase 2 guidance of King County’s “Phased Approach to Reopening Business and Modifying Physical Distancing Measures.” This means that in-home nannies and household support providers are now permitted for both essential and non-essential workers.

We encourage families to make their own decisions relating to their health and nanny employment. However, we hope everyone will comply with the Stay at Home order as much as possible. This is also a good time for families and providers to have open communication about sick care, sick leave, backup plans, etc.

Phase 2 Guidelines include:

  • Whenever possible, the employer should be absent or relocate to another room while the domestic work is in progress.
  • Adults and older children are advised to wear cloth face coverings.  Children under two are not advised to wear face coverings.
  • Practice social/physical distancing as much as possible, maintaining a six-foot distance.
  • If a domestic worker is expected to complete the additional tasks of frequently cleaning and sanitizing, this should be reflected in a written agreement and workers must be compensated for additional time.
  • All individuals should wash their hands regularly.  Employers should supply PPE and hand sanitizer and should frequently clean/disinfect objects and surfaces.
  • Employers and workers must screen themselves at the beginning of the work day, checking for fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches or new loss of taste or smell.
  • The employer is required to inform domestic workers of any symptoms within the entire household 24 hours in advance or at minimum prior to the worker’s arrival and entry into the household.
  • Create policies that encourage workers to stay home or leave the location when feeling sick or when they have been in close contact with a confirmed positive case or someone with COVID-19 symptoms.
